Swine Flu - who cares?

Anyone who knows I'm a nurse has asked me if I think all the precautions that Australia has taken to reduce the spread of swine flu are worthwhile.

The thing I've really noticed is that most people believe that "the swine flu thing" is just hype. The average person seems to believe that we shouldn't try to prevent the swine flu -- quite the contrary!

A group people I was speaking with believed that we should just "catch it" to build up our immunity. I'm glad that I was able to be in this discussion because it enabled me to help this group of well educated people to wonder about why we need immunise to prevent disease. As a child and family health nurse, I am often confronted with the same argument - "why don't we just let our kids catch the childhood illnesses?"

I believe that the average person is so used to high-tech medical world that there is a belief that any communicable illness like swine flu or measles or whooping cough can be cured. When I explain to people that the reason we immunise is because there are no drugs or cures, they are always surprised. The notion that "prevention is better than cure" still isn't well understood.

Nurses work hard to spread the prevention message by talking about washing hands properly, covering mouth and nose when sneezing and staying home when we're unwell and avoiding crowded places.

Maybe we also need to talk more about why we need to do this because I think the message is not accepted due to a disbelief that communicable diseases can be cured.

What do you think?

Post infection It is an interesting thing as a post infected person. There seems to be still a lot of ignorance about swine flu. There also seems to be a stigma attatched to it. People seem to think you've caught something REALLY bad and that you are going to die, and if they catch it, they are also going to die! In the end it is the flu. One that is easily passed on but not any more deadly than Seasonal Flu( unlike H5N1 Avian flu) That being said, We definitely have to be vigilant about cross infection and not passing it onto others as with any communicable disease. Especially around those who are susceptible and have other respiritory/medical issues. Seasonal Flu still casuses approximately 36,000 deaths and more than 200,000 hospitalizations each year (in the US) so it is a serious issue. In the end, we need to be vigilant however, we also need to educate people on what it really is that we are dealing with.

okay for some I agree with you bollywood; people and especially "nurse people" should stay at home and isolated when they are sick with colds and flu and explain why this important. We also need to be seen to be practicing what we preach so we can maintain community respect and belief in nurses.

I totally agree with you Elisa.I had the flu last year whilst doing clinicals at Fairfield Hospital. I was sick for almost a week. The saddest part after I recovered from it is to make up for the clinical hours that I've missed! It's so annoying! So stay away from the FLU!.

SWINE FLU - WE MUST CARE I am a Community Health Nurse. I am surprised at the complacency displayed by my colleagues. One of my work mates had a cold and I chose to wear a mask around him. I was teased for doing this. If this is the attitude of a trained nurse, what hope do we have for the rest of the community? One would think that as nurses, working in the front line, we should take the issue of cross infection seriously. This attitude of complacency and invincibility is frightening.

Catch it now? Interesting blog Fran - I have heard people talking about how it is better to catch swine flu this year than get it next year when it has mutated. Thanks but no thanks. I've had the flu before, and I am very happy to try and avoid it!
