Gee Laverne or 'Ken', whoever you REALLY are ( how did I know that?),

Are you trying to upset the Aboriginal population now? ( "Australia is made up of people who arrived here from somewhere else " )

Perhaps you are willing to give up your job for " ... someone else", but I am not.

... but that's because you are actually 'retired'. Isn't that right Ken?

I just wanted to share with you all that this is not only a problem occurring in NSW.
I am a mum of 3 who left nursing 12 years ago to work in the pharmaceutical industry. Last February I decided that I would love to get back into nursing and started the lengthy process with AHPRA. After 10 long months, and many hurdles I have been told by AHPRA that my degree in nursing is useless and that there is NO way for me to ever nurse again other than to repeat my 3 year bachelor degree!! It astounds me that I can use this degree to become a teacher by undertaking a short course, however the nursing workplace is completely out of my reach. Hopefully we can bring about a change in this in the future as I am sure there are many of us out there who would like the opportunity to work as nurses again.

night duty is so different to the AM or PM shifts, Night duty, is like the observation deck of a day, at times ,its buzzers non stop ,confused pts, pts with APO, pts with chest pain 7 /10 because the girls on the am /pm shifts where busy so they didn't say any thing, the deaths, and family members who talk more candidly about their grief and loss during the quiet times, ND , a time when a nurses full scope of practice may be called upon , the workload is double that of day staff in regional areas, the prize isn't the fatigue you feel when spending more time with your family during the day, and the handover sheet not printed off in time for morning staff, press print !then coffee

The Refresher Course for Registered Nurses used to cost $900.00 in 2008. It ran for two weeks and when I contacted the College of Nursing to enquire why the cost had increased, I was told that it was due to insurance costs.
I am currently having my RN reviewed by APHRA and will know in Feb if I will have to complete the College of Nursing course or undertake a B.N.
At present, I am working as an assistant in nursing in Aged Care and was actually working as an R.N. there last year until APHRA began to review my registration. I would really love to be working there again as an R.N as Aged Care desperately needs R.N’s who want to work with the Aged.
I have found it interesting reading about cases similar to mine and don’t feel so alone in this mismangement of R.N.’s attempting to return to work.

I am also a older RN, and have worked with computers over the years ,particularly in a few ICU I have worked in but the new system that NSW health department has introduce is not user friendly particularly the format used in the Ed's

My other comment is I am also fed up working around the young mums , I worked rearing 4 children so I am aware it can be tough, but I have a life also and a family, so fair is fair
When I was manager I made sure all my staff were rostered fairly, but I think what is happening some of the managers are young mums also so they sympathise with their staff and roster the accordingly.

I am 53 & computers have been around for at least 20 years in the workplace. I am comfortable using all data systems but please give me a computer that is up to the job.
I concur with the allocation of unsocial shifts being given to the predominantly older workers. It is also our time when we should be able to be with our families so start giving us more day shifts, less weekends and less night shifts. We all struggled with child care needs in the past so just ensure older workers start to be given equality in better shifts.
Well written article.

Hi, 52 years here and I have worked for 33 years full time (did not mean too it just happened). My peers love me, excellent on the computers and with experience and I make myself avaliable to help other nurses unsure of what to do, but unfortunately the younger management don't always appreciate my knowledge (and good memery) of what has been tried in the past and not worked as they still want to go ahead with "their vision". So, I am left with the attitude of "go to work and do the best that I can and go home".

So what exactly is the truth of the matter Gordo? Does your conspiracy theory include a special chapter on AHPRA's secret mission to replace all experienced Australian-born nurses with those from foreign soil?

Get over it Gordo. Australia is made up of people who arrived here from somewhere else. Skilled migrants should be welcomed with open arms. Guess what? Most of these "foreign" nurses you want to confer second class status on are Australians, or they soon will be.

Gordo
Wrong again. It does matter what state you are in. NSW is the only state with recency of practice issues and the only one with only one re-entry to practice program.

Also, I think that probably the best thing everyone can do is to visit their local state MP. Inundating MPs with personal representations on the issue will ramp up the pressure where it needs to be. All you have to do is tell them your story.
