I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I'm an RN working in a public hospital but I currently have glandular fever and can't work. Sucks. However, we only get 10 sick days a year and obviously I have used them up, but I still need time off. Is there any way to get extra leave approved? I can't afford to keep taking time off but I can't work cos I'm so exhausted.

My doctor suggested sickness allowance from centrelink but that is barely enough to cover rent and takes a while to get processed.... I'm going to ring my NUM now, but does anyone have experience in this kind of thingHuh Sad

From my understanding once you use up your 10 days of sick leave pay that is it. You can either take leave without pay, tap into your annual leave or your long service leave. It is unfair but unfortunately we are all only entitled to 10 paid sick days Sad

Sick leave has never been increased since I started nursing and the union has never done anything about increasing it despite being in a job where shift work, contact with sick people and stress make nurses more vulnerable. Note that police and teachers have 15 sick days a year. Be careful also to note your sick leave entitlements. When I questioned my entitlements I was told "it would be about right" and they had no earlier records so some of my sick leave disappeared. I think what a lot of people seem to do now that is use their sick leave up is a good idea. I wish I could suggest something you could do but you can take a long while to recover from glandular fever maybe you could do part time and pace yourself?

I am not sure when this was placed as the date is not correct. As nurses we only get ten days per year, which adds up each year for any leave not used each year. We can not all keep some of this each year or some just take all of it anyway. I had over 800 hour of sick leave.I should start to use it or lose it.

This was posted a few months ago, Where I work our sick leave is accrued so I have 400 sick leave hours. I think in the 11 years I have been working for my provider I have only been sick 2 weeks in total. I never needed to use my sick leave so I didn't. But now that I have a toddler and a baby in daycare, I'm pretty sure I will be using it up when they catch something from the other kids in daycare. Thank goodness I have it though! phew....

It is difficult to know whether to use it or not. I got stuck when I moved interstate, 700 hours of sick leave was non transferrable. there shoud be some financial option that you can choose in lieu of 10 sick days. I would take a $1000 xmas bonus in lieu of sick leave.

I have 943 hours sick leave in my "piggy bank." Clearly I am getting older. I have found that as I get closer to retirement many of my colleagues have developed cancer, heart conditions and other potentially life-threatening diseases. I am in the generation now where we are all starting to get our Carpal Tunnels done, knee replacements and having our "bunions" attended to as well. When you are young you may not think sick leave is worth accruing, but as you get older it really is a worthwhile safety-net to have. Could you afford to have 6 months off work for chemo and radiotherapy?

Be careful, taking your entitled sick leave can be subject to investigation by Big Brother. This was a recent tradeoff that many people are not aware of.How can something that is granted in your award be then used against you when you take it.

FT 8hr shift workers get seven days.We get five and one quarter days of sick leave per year i.e 60hrs plus no ADOs. I think nurses need at least ten sick leave days per year. We can only build immunity to a certain number of diseases/illnesses and we can only be vaccinated against a handful of diseases. My friend is a truck driver and gets ten days of sick leave at full pay then another five at half pay. Other than gastro;influenza and the common cold what is he exposed to? If we take five days of sick leave off in a row and can provide a medical certificate then we are sent a warning letter about being unreliable employees. Even if you have 15 sick leave days accrued etc.Could have nothing to do with the incredibly slack infection control measures within our hospital!!

Gordo, I don't work in the private sector at all.I work for a public hospiital. I am full-time and work 12hr rotating shifts. We are not private in any way. All of our staff working 12hr shifts get 60hrs sick leave per annum on the anniversary of commencing employment there.

I do not know anyone who gets 10 paid sick leave days only per year under the public award working 12hr shifts. There are differences between the award for those working 8hr shifts Vs those working 12hr shifts. Those working 8hr shifts get 60hrs but because they work shorter shifts that equals 7 days of paid sick leave plus 3 days of Family & community Services  leave + ADOs. We get 5 x 12hr days + 4hrs per annum; 3 days of FACS leave and no ADOS as we do not work a 40hr week.We work 3 x 12hr shifts/wk = 36hrs for 3/4 weeks per month then one week we work an additional 8hr shift. Our hours are measured over a month. So we must work 156hrs/month.Hence no ADOs. My unit was the first in NSW to re-commence 12hr shifts in 1996. I could show paylips proving we only get 60hrs. Everybody else I work with gets the same. Given NSWNA was involved in the development of 12hr shifts being integrated into the award back in 1996 I cannot see how they would be unaware or that this hospital has continued to be in breach of the state award for over 15yrs. Are you adding 3 days of FACS leave to the total for sick leave to get that figure? Do you work in the public hospital system ? I am an RN not an educator or manager. I have no idea what they get. Hell I'd love to get an additional 16hrs p.a of sick leave.

Do any of the people working in the public sector who said they 'only' get ten days of sick leave per year work FT 12hr shifts? Where I work we cannot use sick leave at all to care for family or sick children. That is Family & Community Services (3 days p.a non-negotiable) leave for which you must attach documentation to prove your child or relative was sick and you have to submit a medical certificate or if used for a court appearance, jury duty etc you must provide documentation or you won't be paid.

Gordo, I finally located a payslip dated on my anniversary which says 76hrs. The rest had 60hrs printed on them so I guess that's where I got that figure. We still don't get 10 days of sick leave.76 hrs = 6.3 days. You could not pay me enough to work in the private sector. I loathed the greed of people like Paul Ramsey. His hospitals run on the smell of an oily rag and to the patient's and staff's detriment. He understaffs and underpays everyone. There should not be any difference in the award between public and private. Why should SOBs like him get away with poor wages and poor service. It isn't right. I hope that our health care system is never privatised or we are all in serious trouble. Health care is a right not a privilege.
