I am very disapointed with our union. We have huge numbers, and all I hear from my collegeues is they dont want to waste $650 a year to be in a union that does nothing, except fund its own agenda's.
Night duty is just the best example of the lack of action despite so many asking for it to be addressed. |

DITO!!!!
Thank God for us older nurses. Sometimes I think we are the only ones who remember what we signed up for. Times are hard and dont look like they are EVER going to get better.
So us older nurses will just keep on keeping on and give our opinions to anyone who will listen or (who cares), and aggitate for better conditions and pay whenever we are given the chance.
Our patients will not suffer, even during a night shift, if it can be helped. |

Re the night shift penalty case. The Commission directed the parties (Dept & NSWNA) to gather more specific information. This is now in process with a survey being recently being conducted with many nurses taking the time to answer questions re their night duty experiences while nursing. This research survey has resulted in follow-up forums now being held across the State. All information gather will be collated for presenting to the Commission at a later date. It's a slow process but we are lucky that this case will not fall into the current govts dictate re wage increases being no more than 2.5%. |

I agree but the response the NSWNA got from the IRC/NSW Health was that there needed to be a study into the impact of night shifts in an Australian context. It will probably show exactly the same results. |

Edward, I don't know what "further research" is needed when the WHO has included shiftwork as a possible carcinogen and definitely a health risk. |

I am a ned grad RN and a delegate at RNSH. My understanding is that the NSWNA took a claim to increase night shift penalties to the industrial relations committee (from the 2008 award campaign) and the result was that they felt that as we were entering into the 2010 award negotiations they would be unable to make a decision until the award negotiations are complete. They also requested further research to be carried out in Australia about the negitive inpact of night shifts.
So in summary there is no increase in night shift penalties on the cards in the 2010 award negotiations. I think that once the 2010 award is finalised the NSWNA will explore the options again (? continue industrial relations commission case).

I believe that anyone crazy enough to enjoy working night shifts deserves the 25% penalties. I am not one of them. |

Once more to all the masses...... start your very own nursing agency, then work through it. Suddenly, not only do you get your wages (as before) but because you charge a commission for sending 'you' there, you effectively get a 40-60% wage rise.
Nursing has changed, and if you don't want to die disgruntled, get out there and adapt! |

I'm inclined to agree with you Old Nurse. The NSWNA doesn't seem to do very much for members these days. Too busy lobbying for asylum seekers and wasting our funds on ALP election campaigns. I didn't even get a "Lamp" this month. |

Nursing used to be fun when I started nearly 40 years ago. Too much bullshit now, too many dickhead managers and out of touch bureaucrats. I was wondering about the night shift penalties, they might give me back pay for the last 39 years. Pigs might fly too. NSWNA might refund my subscriptons perhaps, because they do bugger all for country nurses. |

I don't need to because I use nursing for other items, as well as the 'means to an end'. I earn more than a director of nursing, and help others establish themselves independently via nursing.
But, my point stands - go on full strike or resign. If nurses really want the $$$$$, Saudi, Canada, the UK, USA are all crying out. If I were under 40 years of age, I'd be off again. If I were in my 20's, I cannot understand what would keep me here! |

I also suggested mass resignation, and think it will be the only option that actualy gets anyone to notice, or to do anything. If 80 ICU nurses from one hospital resgined together to work in Saudi, that would do it! |

It may be illegal to strike but nobody can take away your right to resign! Interesting situation if a couple of thousand nurses resigned with their termination date to all fall on the same day!, Citing lack of industrial support from the employer as the cause of the resignation. |

Well we can't work permanent nights even if we want to.Our NUM forced everybody onto rotating shifts. The joke is this was meant to ensure everyone had the opportunity to attend in-service and have access to educational seminars etc. I've yet to attend an inservice. When unit monthly staff meetings are held they happen at 7.30am the time dayshift is meant to getting individual handover on their ICU or 2 x HDU patients. This means we get off late if we are on the nightshift because our handovers (as in most ICUs) can take 30 minutes. If you had two patients on the nightshift then you are guarranteed to get off late. The dayshift (every one of them) are made to attend the meeting before taking handover! None of us are paid overtime for that inconvenience either. I am certain that we will never see an increase to 25% for nightshifts. Even more so if Abbott actually wins the election. He would make it only applicable to the private sector if at all because he sucks up to the private sector and profit before patients. |

Amanda63,patients and staff are compromised due to pt./staff ratios. This is why industrial action was mentioned.Somewhat of a catch 22 here don't you think.Maybe the media could focus on the unsafe staffing levels at night. It is a little difficult to organise a supper break to discuss these issues for all the disgruntled tired night nurses when the aforementioned don't get a break because of the skeleton staffing levels!! |

We can have lunch and morning tea rallies though and , in fact, they have proven more successful than strikes because the public have a better opinion of you...especially if it's in your own time. You are not compromising patients or leaving skeleton staff, but , with good media coverage, you can get excellent results (out branch has done this numerous times.) |
