find it hard to sleep when I have had to care for between 7 and 9 very ill patients, i come home feeling that I have not provided appropiate for the patients. I feel rather stressed and anxious about this. I'm at the point of walking away from nursing. Iam still currently completing my post grad year. I have very little to no support from collegues or educators.

We are pushed to find suitable beds for patients in different specialties and sometimes its mad and it becomes musical beds!

I would be interested to hear any feedback from those wards in the state which have the mandated nurse:patient ratios in place. It would be good to hear what impact it has had on patient care, and work satsisfaction etc...

I can sympathise with you as I work within a small rural hospital where we usually have between 1/8 and often 1/12. As we are a small facility we have no ward clerk the staff are responsible for the phones, RN's perform all the usual duties as well as pathology collection, booking xrays, CT's and other tests as well as conducting allied health meetings, doctors rounds and discharge planning involving ACAT and compacks. I would be extatic if we could have 1/5 maybe then I could nurse effectively instead of rushing from one client to the next without a spare second to discuss concerns and treatment with them. And just dont get me started on rosters ours ends next Monday and there is still no site of the next one unfortunately this is a common occurance I am seriously considering retiring.

I agree with all comments. I have worked as an RN and midwife for over 30years in both public and private sector. Currently I work in a small private hospital where on evening shift we are currently 1:8 or some days 1:12. With both post -op and medical patients. No dinner breaks. Porters are sent off early(to save money), we have to answer the phone calls (and they are many). clean & make up beds for the next days admissions. and also expected to clear away dinner trays. 1:4 is my dream. and we have been told our man hours are too high!!!!

There are some nurses who are less than ecstatic about the ratios. Those hospitals in rural and remote areas who already can't get enough nurses, and are usually shortstaffed get little benefit from 1:5 ratios.

We needn't think things are going to improve anytime soon. Once Fatty O'Farrell wins the premiership he will without a doubt re-enact Howard's old legislation to disempower all essential services workers. the people of NSW will blindly vote him in despite having absolutely no policies to speak of. I just wish there was someone else running in this election. We can only get opposite ends of the compass as far as political parties go. I wonder how he intends to create more nurses - clone us!!!

There seems to be a lot of talk about the 1:4 ratios that has gone on for a long time now. What the hells going on? Talk to someone from the NSW Ambulance Servive these guys seem to get results. Why cant we go to the media.I think if the puplic find out just how unsafe they are when they go to hospital we may just get some support. Remember as nurses we need to support each other.

Attention Group C Hospital nurses; You campaigned for 1-4 ratios. You went on strike for 1-4 ratios. You closed beds for 1-4 ratios. You are being offered a ratio of 1-5! You are being denied the recognition you deserve and you are being subjected to discrimination. All your time and effort in supporting the 1-4 campaigne will have been wasted. If you allow this ratio offer to be accepted your Pts will not recieve the same amount of time and care of those that will have a nurse ratio of 1-4. Vote NO to the 1-5 ratio offer at your next NSWNA Branch meeting

I totally agree, having to work 1-19 ratio at times. It is horrendous for all. Plus more unskilled trainees are put on the wards with plenty of OH&S issues to be addressed, let alone patient care!!!! When will all this stop?????

An offer has made on the nurse-to-patient ratios but did you know that community nurses and midwives are left out?

Find out how you can stand up for your rights.

Nah I kind of like the idea of there being two of us/me. Appeals to my narcissistic personality.

Funnily enough I started my Nursing career in mental health.Back then it was called psych.I chose the name Ratchett as a tribute to the movie which I love to this day. However I do hope that I never become as horrible as the original Nurse Ratchett.
