Warning: May upset your stomach

I'm perfectly fine with bloody urine, stools, vomit and sputum. The one I'm not really good at handling is malaena... Sick

sputum! just makes me gag even when I hear someone in the street hacking it up! When I was pregnant I had a really hard time - the worst was a postnatal patient passing a huge blood clot into a pan. I just gagged right in front of her and was soooo embarrased!:WinkShy

Warning Don't read if you are sqaumish...

Sputum....as I nearly vomited when a confused patient thought that his sputum cup contained a drink!

Vomit...when i first strted nursing I had a patient who was vomiting into a bowl that I was holding and it splashed up into my eye...ow it stung:OSick

Most dreaded specimen? Has to be the lady with projectile vomiting of faeces. My goodness, did the whole ward complain! They should of had a thought for the poor women who had the bowel obstruction. Seriously though, I have never ever wanted to throw up so much... tried very hard...just wished I'd had my Vicks!

I am usually fine with urine, stools, vomit and sputum but the one and only thing that brang me undone and always will... is the smell of necrotic flesh, i don't think there is anything worse... I had to undress a patient's foot one day during my training and their skin was literally falling off their foot, the smell made me gag and I had to leave the room... I felt so sick afterwards Sick

Well now....I used to work in a respiratory ward in the 80s and we has to observe and measure the sputum each shift.... then tip it down the toilet...it used to go splat when it hit the water! I did gag a few times!Sick

Ah Livicust - you have reminded me of being a student nurse in the renal unit and having to measure the 24 hour collections every morning first thing. No one wanted that task as it was vile! The most junior nurse always got it and it was 30-60 minutes of gagging and choking!Wacko

A client of mine has a primary right fungating breast wound. She is in the palliative care unit. The smell is more offensive than the lady who had the bowel obstruction....I actually use vicks to visit her, so that I can be therapeutic. I care about her...and hope that her family will cope.

i don't know about the worst specimen, i know the worst smell i've ever experienced was the smell coming from a maggot infested wound. the poor man got his leg ampuatated after that. also hate the smell of pseudumonas. its weird how its satisfying to share this stuff :-)
