My heart goes to the family of emergency nurse, Michelle Beets who was found dead near her Sydney home.
Does anyone know Michelle or those who work at Royal North Shore Hospital.
So sad.
Here's the link to the SMH article:
Emergency Nurse killed before she got into her Sydney Home
To all Nurse Uncut members, please be more vigilant of your surroundings when you're walking on your own.

Yes this so so so sad. That happened around the corner from my work place. It has the whole of the chatswood/willoughby community talking. I hope they catch the man he deserves to have the book thrown at him.
Such a tragidy! |

To the fellow nurses at R N S and all in ED this is too real to cope with. Nurses alike care and offer you all support in mind and spirit. We are all professional but this savage act is beyond it!!!!
I share all the above comments.
Added I have requested N S W N A to have a 'special event' on May 12 th 2010 Nurses Day, and maybe a specific 'hot-line'set up.
As nurses we are trained to look, observe, report and document. Given time things clear in your mind and some small element may come forward. We do live in very troubled times and this is an example right on our doors.
I felt totally numb at hearing such news! For years I have always used liquid-paper on my ID that shows my family name and will refuse to conform to showing it. Hope you all act on this as well. |

Our condolences to family friends and fellow nurses that knew her.

In passing if others feel so inclined let 'we the nurses'of NSW' set up a'Thread' and designated possie in nurse-uncut' where we can report strange events, even if small and do our best for our safety.
If info is put here let us grant Admin full permission to give such info to the Police if required. What do you all think please?
And whilst here would a 'Specific Thread' suit in order to remember other nurses who we may have known as a fitting place to remember them or not? I am not too sure but put this out here for consideration...it is a very emotional time for all of us crowd... rgds..K |

Just how close is this murder too being solved? It hardly ranks in the papers today. Wonder why? Still eats me away to think about it!! |

Pretty sure much of the investigation's findings are kept quiet to enable the police to not 'give away' or 'scare off' the suspects. Nurses probably should not only have a 'continuing education' booklet, but a ' who threatened me today' booklet, in which they stick the MRN label of the patients with comment beside it of the incident, dates, and the relative or 'concerned other' involved. There should be a free service to nurses of private investigators that can be used at the time of an 'incident' who go out and 'get all the data' on these people early on.
What is an absolute joke is that there are signs in every hospital that say " physical and verbal assault will not be tolerated from patients' relatives and visitors" , when it should be "patients, relatives, and visitors". The signs actually protect the patients, and gives them free rein to attack nurses. Hospitals then state " oh but the patient was confused and didn't know what he was doing!". I worked in ED some years ago, and was asked to do obs on a patient. The previous shift had pulled the curtains around the patient ( why would you do this in an ED, as it blocks you observing them?) and as I opened the curtain, I copped the patient on full swing with a hooked cane. The blow hit me in the face, and put a hole in the side of my mouth that you could stick a pen through. He tried to hit me on a second swing, but I almost broke his wrist by then. Blood was everywhere, and 20 minutes later I had 8 stitches in my face, and was back looking after him. I removed the restraints, as by now he realized that as he couldn't 'surprise' me, he wouldn't win. I'm 6ft 3inches tall and 100kg. If anyone else had walke in he would have taken out their eye, or fractured their skull.Though his obs were normal, the argument became that he 'may have had a UTI' thus didn't know what he did. He was my build and 5 years younger. I had to fill in an incident report for nearly breaking his wrist. The hospital billed me for the treatment, so I offered them a court case, and the bill was taken back. I'd add the photo of my face at the time, but there's no 'add photos' feature here! |

Bernhard,as a nurse, also a trained investigator,I agree. it is best to remain quite in some cases.
I have also worked in prisons[not for criminal activity on my part..Ha Ha!]
Via another connection I have, there is a 'MUG-SHOT-BOOK' (this is how it is on the cover i.e. capital text)used by Sex-Workers and exclusive to them.I know where it is published and yes,all gender sex-workers,public or private have access to it.
Any person'client - punter' who offends in a physical way,is too demanding, tries to push illegal substances via them gets reported in it and very good artists'visuals are open to see based on info given by that sex-worker. Some are based on mobile photo evidence.
As a means of general info it gives added protection;aids in arrests and as a JP(NSW) I have been asked to site such documentations.
Your abuse sounded shocking man!!Just so very bad and begs the question of Team-work and Security???
Privacy is one thing re Pts Rights;however none of us do go to work to get physical abuse and Pre-existing Rights in my book are removed at the very point when such abuse starts, and such persons should be charged as well as your employer for Breach of Duty Of Care under the Act, Bernhard.
I am glad you made a stance.Well done. |

That item had no time for security staff (who would have probably broken his arms anyway - they aren't as nice as I was!). I stopped him soon enough, and have had harder hits in the face during a few years living in Mt Druitt in the 1967-75 era.
Had harder hits again the first Saturday of each month in the Luxford Road Catholic Church (we organised a dance there those days - great night! but became the biggest fight-night in Sydney!- but we always won!).
My wife was the one who was more upset, as she said my face looked a bit like the Joker in "Dark Knight" movie, with an up-curved scar from the edge of my mouth!
Once (upon a time) I got mugged on the train to work while I was in uniform on way to work... Never mug a nurse on a train when you're drunk! - No one even came to aid, so I left the idiot lying in the carriage, minus his ID which I took when I got off at Lidcombe.
Unfortunately most nurses aren't the build to handle the attacks as I am. I actually rarely get harrassed at work, and even withthe psycho patients, I talk them down quite well. The staff always comment that they can't work out which of us really needs the treatment more, by mid conversation! Maybe I should do psych?, but don't think I'm that mad yet! |

Another nurse lost. This time from a plane crash.
The pilot of a patient transfer flight that rapidly lost altitude before crashing and exploding in a Sydney residential street may have missed a chance to make a safe landing due to fog.

How many nurses are dying weekly from cancer? May be a surprising figure, as had a few RN friends die in last 6 months from this.
How many who die, are smokers? - probably a majority. Why are 'smokers' or obese nurses classified as 'health' care workers? |
