It's Father's Day on 5 September, any nurse out there who'd like to write a tribute to the special man in their life?

We can feature it on our blog!

Email me on admin@nurseuncut.com.au if interested :-)

My poor Dad is spending Father's Day in hospital. It was his 44th Wedding anniversary two days ago too. I called him today but he was really groggy and in a lot of pain. He is scared that he will be discharged home tomorrow despite having absolutely no control over his pain.

Orthopaedic surgeons decided to gain consent from him whilst he was groggy to inject corticosteroids into his shoulder despite having no evidence supporting any diagnosis. My Dad is 69yrs old. The local in that injection kept the pain down for a day then once it wore off it came back with a vengeance. I told him not to consent to further steroid injections. They do nothing for his pain and will destroy his shoulder then the orthos will refuse to do the shoulder reconstruction they caused to become necessary because he isn't a sport star or privately insured patient.

My Mum couldn't spend the day with him as she was ill with gastro. She ended up in ED at another hospital last night. I really need to be there to help sort out this mess but there is no way on earth my manager would ever grant me leave to do it. I applied for four different months of leave next year and despite all leave being taken for 2010 and until Feb end 2011 I still have not been given any idea when I might take leave. I wish I had nursing friends in QLD who could help me with this. I wish my Dad didn't have to spend six weeks so far in pain with no answers and no relief.

Sad to hear of the pain your dad ( and you) are going through. I spent father's day at the wedding of my daughters' childhood friend. No presents, just hugs from my daughters and a handshake from my son(worth more than presents). (All are in their 20's). You need to consider starting your own agency, so every shift gives you not just your normal wage, but commission each shift also ( at least $100 - $180 per shift). As you get more staff, you make commission from their work, till with 10 staff working 4 shifts a week each, you should be making $4,000 - to $6,000 per week. I used to sit on a yacht in Sydney Harbour, sipping champagne, and getting phone calls from major hospitals for staff. Wonderful life. December 2006- January 2007 and I'd get calls at 3am (my time) for nurses, and I'd put staff out within minutes, but never told the hospital that I was at the time cruising the Nile. My email is bnamedia@msn.com ...............

Pretty big leap and not in my league Bernhard. I could no more get a business loan than a home mortgage. My 5 yr old Hyundai Getz would not serve as collateral ! I have no desire to live in a tent in the park which is what my future might hold going into that much debt even if I could get a loan. My friend owns an agency with her husband but they were already wealthy so they weren't risking much. I helped her get her foot in the door of various private hospitals because the hospitals already knew what caliber of ICU/ED/CCU/Midwife I was from shifts I had done via other agencies. Due to my lifting restriction I can no longer do anything other than SCN which is not enough to live on.Not much work in private paediatrics and I'll be dammed if I work for $35/hr with no penalties or conditions in public hospitals. Maybe a project for the future I think. If I was part way through paying off a mortgage and had no work-cover claim hanging off my back. I would love to go up to QLD and sort things out for my father and help my mother learn how to care for him without getting his goat up but there is absolutely no leave available for anyone other than the NUM for 2010 and the beginning of 2011 in my unit. I have only FACS leave and they would not pay it as the documentation necessary for that doesn't include things like this and it is only three days p.a. I have 9 wks of LSL + 6wks of AL owed but could not get it approved. Even if my father had just died I would only get FACS leave of 3 days. If I just took unapproved leave without pay then I would be sacked because they are understaffed and the insurer would be all over me for losing my job. I know it seems much simpler from where you stand but it is more involved than you realise I'm afraid. I'm glad you had a lovely Fathers' day with your family. A wedding would be a special way to spend it. My parents share their wedding anniversary with my sister and her husband so no excuses for forgetting each other's anniversaries or Fathers' Day given how close they are. Thank you for your wishes for my Dad and suggestions. Wish I was in a position to do it.

loans are difficult, but did you know that you can use your super as security to get an investment loan? - so can use it to buy a quality investment property. Quality properties are 5% of the properties out there. The average property doubles in value every 7-10 years, but quality properties double in about 7 ( or less), so $80,000 Super will securee about $400,000 loan for an investment property, which in 7-10 year will increase in value by $400,000. Last August I was in debt $500,000, so I thought - 'that'll take too long to pay off', and (during the GFC) took out a loan for $430,000 and bought a property 7km from Brisbane, so now I was $900,000 in debt, so thought, let's go one more, and so now we are $1,300,000 in debt, but our 3 properties are increasing in value by about $2,000 a week (which means our equity goes up in value by $100,000 a year). Others tell us we are crazy, but it is real, and the system (if you understand it) works. Knowledge is the key, and if you don't 'do it' then you become one of the 97% who will be broke, on welfare, or the lousy pension. Where do you live and I'll refer you to mentor (free) to help/advise. Meetings are free, knowledge is free, belief is up to you. Health is the ultimate gift, and I take (daily) 9grams Vit D, 6-10 grams Vit C, over 160mg Vitamin E (as tocotrienols), Vit E (as in alpha tocopherol), alpha lipoic acid (king of the antioxidants), coenzyme Q-10, plant-derived Antioxidant hi-dose mix, and eat fresh fruit/veges daily. Diabtetes, cancer, heart disease all can be slowed, even stopped if you know what natural products to take. Conventional treatment puts you on the rollercoaster ride to Hell, which is sad, as that is where 99% are being led.

Thank you anyway but I don't spend what I don't have the capacity to pay back. I do not have 20+ yrs of superannuation to borrow against. I'm glad you think you I'm much wealthier than I am but I'm not. I lost heaps in the stock market crash. I can't risk having absolutely nothing to retire on given I am not entitled to an aged pension. I was born after 1965.

I already take multivitamins + extras like co-enzyme q10;+ Vitamin D 1600 units/day (more than 2000 units/day is toxic);high dose fish oil 2500mg/day,(high dose vitamin E is toxic to myocardium) and I eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg along with medications for my neuropathic pain.(I take just two.) I do an exercise program of pilates/yoga/physiotherapy/Feldenkrais combined therapy which provides core body strengthening;relaxation, stretching;gait and balance improvement. I nurse lots of CP/DD kids with chronic pain so I know what extra vitamins they take daily to aid their pain management. It doesn't cure their pain and they still take other medications on top. And most of their parents have tried them just on diet and vitamins/minerals alone but couldn't stand watching their kid cry in pain constantly. You might think I'm weak in comparison to you with your dietary cure for your pain and everything but that's your problem. I'm glad you found what works for you. Sorry but I get defensive when people tell me I am not trying "hard enough" or "eating or swallowing the right stuff". I have tried it all so please lets leave it there. What works for one person doesn't work for others. It's a bit like when people ask me if I've tried Nurofen yet!!

ADAPT (Michael Cousins- RNS) is where 99% of people in pain are being pointed by insensitive and cruel people. Thank you for your suggestions and I will take them under advisement.
