Hi,Im Angela. I have been an RN for 2 and a half years. came out of uni and went straight into theatre as a new grad. i am just about to start working on a ward, as i have had enough of theatre and i really miss the patient contact. Like Ann, i was a late starter to nursing but am so glad i did it now. I am 37 years old and still learning everyday. hope to hear from other members about what stage theyre at etc. i have never done a night duty before so i dont nknow how im going to handle that, we will just see. bye for now,. ange. |

welcome to nursing and nurse uncut ange. Don't worry too much about night duty - it's okay; apart from the weird sleep patterns and the 4 am head-nodding "i'm so cold" bit, it's peaceful with lots of fun and camaraderie. Nursing is different at night. |

Hi Angela! Welcome to Nurse Uncut! Like you, I'm also preparing myself for night shifts on the 3rd week of next month. It'll be 4 nights in a row. I'm not a big fan of night shifts. But a lot of nurses I ask say that it's not as bad as we think. I guess we just have to be positive |

night duty isn't too bad if its done in a stint and not one on one off you need continuity from someone who does it spasmoticly. |

Hi Angela, Welcome to Nurse Uncut! I agree with patience on night shift, apart from the weird sleep patterns and nodding off at around 3 - 4am and feeling like your in a freezer... it's not too bad (i don't mean night shift to sound that bad ...lol). I find it better if you do a row of nights instead of 2 - 3 here and there, better to do a whole stint of them and get it over and done with! Peronally, I like night because it's a bit more laid back than morning and afternoon shifts and you can have some fun while your working and of course management isn't there ...lol. My sleeping patterns of a day vary when i'm on night shift, one day I might only get 2 -3 hours sleep and the next day I might het 6 - 8 hours. I start nodding off at around 3 - 4am during night shift but I find if I go and find something else to do and have a break at when I am doing i'm fine... night shift is also a great time to get to know your fellow work mates as where I work it can be very quiet of a night so you spend a good time of the night just chatting away.
Good luck with your first stint of night shift and take care! Luke |

Welcome. I loved night duty...apart from regular rotation I did it permanently for almost a year. I did miss the contact with patients (i like my chats)but I did not miss the relatives. I also found that I could sleep OK but my mood did change a bit. It is easy to skip some sleep time but remember to make sure you get enough sleep - it is important. S |

Hiyya Angela Look night duty is like every other shift you are going to work my friend - it's what you make it, well that's how I see it after worjing many years in this profession. It can be as pleasant or boring as any shift, and tiring - beware of 0400 lol!!. OK you don't get so much imteraction with the patients / residents / clients (whatever we are meant term them now I prefer patients) but sometimes that's not such a bad thing if you need a bit of a slower pace at tiems. Having said that I suppose there are places you are going to work at night that are flat out at times. Anyway good luck and don't let it stress you out eh? Reg's - MM
Cripes just had to edit wish there was more light in here - and a spell check he he!! |

Good grief getting too old for this - forgot to intro myself hope matron's not watching (yeh that old!)
I'm lets say MM and an RN of just on 40 years. Have enjoyed most of my career but am now looking forward to the big R and getting down to some serious computing. I started back in '71 and have seen lots of changes over the years, done five post grad certs, risen to NM status and now back to RN status - not enough O2 up there for me if you get my drift! I do miss the earlier days when there was so much less paperwork as we have today but thats progress I reckon, and i have great admiration for those coming into the professional now because it is getting tougher and requires an increasingly higher knowledge of technical and legalistic bases.
Anyway I've rabbitted on for long enough so here's looking at you all!! |

hi!! I'm Krishna. I think it's great there is a nurses forum to say things relatively freely. The hopes, the aspirations, the venting, the despair. And get input from others, especially in fields that are different from my own. I look forward to the dialogue. |

Nights are perfect, as you have all day to enjoy yourself. Only sleep in 2 hour increments (set the alarm) and after a while you'll only need 2 hours a day! The nights make you feel like an 'overlord' as the world around you is slipping past, with you watching from above. If you EVER get that 'heavy eyelids' feeling, have a cup of ice cubes on hand, and suck on a cube - takes away the tiredness almost immediately. Don't rug up too much, as makes you lethargic...a bit of coldness won't hurt, and is fixed by moving around, walk, work etc. There's always something to do, reorganise, file, etc....and the morning staff will appreciate it. Work at least 120 percent...pretend you OWN the hospital, and work accordingly. |
