Isn't this the very same situation that RN's have been working through for decades? Recognition of further education and qualifications?
We created this new system without much consideration of the long term implications and now we have to manage it. Yes EEN's do deserve a dollar recognition for taking the initiative to take that extra step. It can't be one rule for one group and not for the other. This type of thinking just continues the oppressive health system practices that pits one profession against the other and moves us away from the business of providing good service.
Health is expensive, but it is a basic human right and more of the GDP needs to be put into it rather than military exercises and politicians salaries.
All nurses including AIN's, EN's, EEN's, RN's, RM's deserve recognition and respect for their commitment to a very toxic health system.

Why are EEN's doing some of the jobs that a RN are doing.
In the operating theatre, there is a shortage , like all the other area's in health. The goverment wanted to use instrument tech's to replace them. The OTA pushed to have EEN's to be trained to help in the shortage of RN's in theatre.Where I work there is fifty RN"s to four EEN's.Only two of us work full time ,the other two do two days a week, so we won't be taking over soon.Cool

Where to start on this issue??
Yes most talk of MONEY and Pay Rates; so the reality is folks, NO STATE GOVT has the $$$$'s to pay out for services no matter what expertise you have. Get real, no one made you to do this EEN Status. It was your choice and you took it on because the 'system' is made that way.
Many who remain EN only are having the real laugh. Sad but true, RN's are decreasing in numbers, but if you and it is YOU..no one else,,select do do the work loads don't complain.
You have an Industrial Right to say 'NO I will not do that' and state your reasons. If you can't do that then I suggest with respect get NSWNA to act against 'this imposed system'.
Send your own letters to the Min Of Health of NSW and the Fed Min for Health. Spend 50c stamp and do it.
If you say nothing..nothing will change...go into the Sydney CBD and visit Labor HQ Building ners Chinatown..see the new lobby and the power NSW Union's do have..just ammmmaaaazzzzaning.+ it educates the kids as well! Do enjoy

Yes I heard this too! Not only that, they have separated the degrees at UTS. The degree used to be called Bachelor of Nursing, Midwivery and Health. Now if you want to specialise in midwivery you do a different degree, and you don't graduate with a nursing registration. I think this is a really sad way path to go dawn. The one thing I really liked about nursing is that when you got sick of one area you could just simply change to another, and when you go sick of that or you didn't like it you could change again. I think in years to come you won't be able to do that without having to do a certificate or diploma first, and that is such a shame.

Your right Shoils (I'm saying that a lot today!) - most advertised management jobs are asking for tertiary qualifications in health management; I've been looking at them and making a decision about whether I want to pursue that or not.
But I don't think (or hope) that RN's will just do overseeing etc. We may become more and more specialised though and that's worry in a way because specialised, niche animals are at more risk of extinction!
I was at a seminar the other evening and it was about nurses registration from 2010. There was a discussion about a plan to have separate registers for registered midwives and RN's and the implications of that for those of us who currently hold both registrations. It looks as if we will have to choose one or the other because we will have to prove a minimum number of hours of practice in the specialty. Where this will ultimately lead us is an interesting question Oh

Me too, I have a feeling though the RN role will be more of a management role ( like in nursing homes) and us middle managers will be the ones made obsolete Sad We will either have to go do an MBA to get to top management or go back to being RN's.

60years old is the new 40 years old, 40is the new 20.

EENs are the new RNs .... I read the other day that EENs can be accredited to give medications via a PICC Line (I do not kid) ..... I predict that EENs (bless them) will take over the role of the RNs .... in time.

... and they will get paid pennies to do the job we do now ... and RNs will price themselves out of the market.

I hope I am wrong.
Sad

I also work in the operating theatre and have done the same course.
I also do not get any extra to scrub. Many of the RN's thought that I was being paid at a higher level than the EEN that had not done the course. Management do not want to help find if we are entitled for a better pay.Big Smile

OMG I couldn't do without my EEN!!!! she is just the best!!! in fact she better than our RN's at times. We pay her the equivalent to a 1st yr RN. EN's and EEN's are greatly under valued. When I was training I learned more from the EN's than the RN's. They have more knowledge than RN's give them credit for.

I have a few friends who are EENs in the Nursing Home and they say it drives them nuts when they go to RN Meeting because they are virtually ignored and when they go to Nurses meeting they are told they have already been to RN Meeting. Some of the RNs are very critical and not supportive at all.The girls also say it would be nice to be better recognised financially also.Mind you most of our EENs are wonderful to us AINs we have a very good working relationship with them.Big Smile

This is a post by a member on the Thank You Form of our site that I am re-posting here:

What are we worth I have been an EEN since 1981, working in different areas during this time I have accomplished many skills. For the past 12 years I have worked in an operating theatre. Three years ago I was lucky enough to go to Sydney and complete the Instrument Nurse coars for the EN. Although I feel that I can offer alot of skills to the area I work in , I am still on the basic pay rate of any other EEN with no experience. It would be nice for EEN's to be paid appropriately for the skills that they can offer.
