Can I say in one word ... yes.
But ... I am too afraid to go into details as you have done as I do need my job and I do believe that my managers also read posts here as I have heard them chat about them about the water cooler but in all seriousness, the answer is yes I have been bullied and yes I to felt that the union rep did not support me and I was to be served up on a plater as you say and yes I was luckly to have been able to turn it all around and prove myself innocent.... with no / none / zero help from the union rep that just sat quietly beside me and did not say a word except congatulations when it was all over. Why was she there ... what help was she |

Who has been bullied in their nursing career? It continues even when area health services say its being addressed.
Yes I too have been bullied, and our Area Health Service has now had bully workshops to address the problem ... has it helped .... some but I am not confident that it will help long term.
The answer ... maybe assirtive (?sp) training and better ways to report ... at the moment if one does a IMS it just goes to the manager and if the manager is the problem ... you can go one level higher ... but you need to be brave to do that ... and I have seen nurses have to leave that have done that.
I am so sorry to let you know this ... but I will not let my daughters do nursing, they are very intellient and caring but I am directing them to other areas of study.
A generation of lost nurses ... what will the world do without nurses. |

This thread about bullying has had 377 views - compared to most other threads in the forum which range from 20 to 200 (more or less) So, I'm going to have a rant! It says to me that bullying in nursing is an issue that is like an iceberg! It's there and we only see the tip of it, but underneath is this huge unaddressed problem moving silently amongst us all, just waiting to sink anyone of us without warning and without help. Not many of us want to talk about it openly because a real stigma is attached to complaining or whistle blowing or lodging a grievance. When you do any of these things you are not protected and the bully seems to have more rights and protections. For instance - the victim mustn't talk openly about the bullying in case the victim "slanders" the bully by the allegations! If an investigation is held then the victim has to sign confidentiality agreements agreeing not to say anything about the bullying to anyone! There is something so wrong with our current system that actually facilitates and protects bullies in being able to dodge the consequences of this anti-social behaviour. There was a letter to the editor in the last Lamp about a student nurse dreading her placements due to the behaviour of some RN's. This is appalling! This has to stop and be recognised as a significant and ongoing nursing issue. Perhaps all nurses must be made to attend some sort of mandatory sessions in what bullying in nursing is and what to do and how to stop it. AND not just a lip service session to meet the legislative requirements for accreditation! A real re-education program that releases us from this insidious problem. |

Your story is awful foxylass. When you're bullied, you're very alone. Like all abuse it makes you doubt your own reality. I was watching the news last night and there was a story on DV and how perpertrators can be arrested now without relying on a witness. At Last! If only you could do the same to the psychopaths running around the health system abusing their way to the top and being allowed to get away with it! It's wrong. People wonder why many nurses don't stay. One big reason is this issue with psychological, behind-closed-doors bullying. The victim of bullying is who speaks out is then bullied by the whole system. It's disgraceful |

To me, bullying is a just a plain ole breakdown of treating others as you would want to be treated. This reminds me of what my mother used to say before she died. Bullying sucks. As a new grad, I had my fair share. It was mostly subtle, and at times underhand. I am happy to say that my education prepared me for this. However, one has to ask why this education is necessary? |

How disheartening for you that you're not being heard. Why are bullies continually protected and the victim punished. It's so wrong! Have you read your grievance policies and kept written records of incidences because that's what you have to do if you want action |

Bullying in NSW, I agree that bullying is very much alive and well in our work place. I have been nursing for 23 years and for the most part have found it extremely rewarding professionally. However in the past 18months I have worked in the country for the Greater Western Area Health Service, first in Dubbo and then in Bathurst. I lasted 3 months in Dubbo before being bullied out of that job by the driver as I was working for patient transport and moved to Bathurst and am now currently being bullied here as well and find myself questioning whether there is something wrong with me? In my 23 years nursing it is only since moving to the country that I have experienced bullying at all and find myself now questioning whether to continue in the nursing profession at all. It has been especially difficult as I went to my nursing unit manager who was entirely unsympathetic and implied that I was at fault and that I needed to deal with it. How does one manage bullying behaviour when your own boss denies it exists and is not inclined to discuss/deal with any issues raised? Until I started working in the country I did not even know that bullying in nursing even existed and have even less idea on how to cope with it besides leaving nursing for good.

Sadly bullying is still alive and kicking (literally) within nursing. One of the difficulties is that most people are afraid to speak up. There is a lot well-worded bullying and harrassment policies with accompanying rhetoric spouted by health care leaders; unfortunately the rhetoric disguises the reality that there remains little accountability for the bully and even less support and recourse for the victim |

I haven't noticed any decline in bullying. It is a prevelant in nursing as it was when I started. The only difference I can see is that it is more subversive, starting rumours, antagonising, or passive aggressive behaviour. Be littleing of EENs by RNs is the most common I have noticed in recent times. It really is a culture that needs to be broken and the sooner the better. The main problem is, that in an industry where people of such varied backgrounds come together, there are always going to be personality clashes. However, I think as adults we should put these differences aside and work towards our common goal. I have people at work that I can not relate to but we have discussed our difference and worked out a way to work together. Sometimes being at work is like being back at high school. |

I think bullying is present in any profession. The question is, what is being done to address it? |
