Nurses in Canada have been wearing scrubs for years, not just solid colours but also prints, they are comfortable wash well and are easy transport to and from work and are cheap to purchase. The outfits here are warm stuffy and not very practical to wear.
They also wear white nursing shoes and or a white sneaker with good support such as Ascics, New Balance, and Nike. These are comfortable on the feet, and better for backs compared to the black shoes that are available for nurses to wear and are usually cheaper than the black dress ones we currently wear.
They are also breathable and have the ability to machine wash if they get dirty at work. Nurses are on their feet for hours at a time and the dress shoes are not made for comfort, whereas the sneaker offers full support and you do not have sore feet at the end of the day when you take them off.
Nurses also are not allowed to wear their shoes from work outdoors as they are a form of transmission for germs and are kept at work at all times. You also have the option of wearing hospital scrubs if they get soiled by a patient. If they are bringing in scrubs I thin that the nurses should hav ethe option to purchas eany color that they wish most patients don't care if the nurse is an EEN, EN or RN they jsut want to get better and leave so why should we have to be color coded, maybe kitchen staff and cleaners should have a specific color so the patients can distinguish nurses from other support staff. |

Uniforms are very controversial at the moment! I love scrubs. I bought my own and can wear them on night-duty but not during the day. The ED nurses are allowed to wear them all the time but the ward nurses are not. This is discriminatory uniform practice. The NSW health uniform jean skirt has no loop-holes and tiny pockets. I'm expected to carry a dect phone, a duress alarm, personal drug keys AND the DD's in this....well something has to go because it just does't work so it's the dect!!
Scrubs are roomy, have wonderful pockets, are comfortable and fulfill the OH and S requirements of a uniform. When is nursing going to come in to the modern age?? (like the ambos!) I don't want to look like a shop assistant!! |

I've got to say scrubs are much more comfortable and practical to wear. Also they do give a good professional and corporate image. We are easily identifyable to our patients and to visitors to the hospital. I don't understand why these uniforms are not mainstream. |

I hate the polyester shirts, they are so uncomfortable not to mention cling to your body like plastic. I am also a bit annoyed at the fact that EENs share the same colour shirt as AINs. They want to give us more responsibility but still see us as no more than an AIN ? |

Hi, just watching comments with interest. Last year we were allowed to wear scrubs (midwife). In the rural hospital we may be on the ward or in Birthing Suite. Most of the midwives now wear the scrubs every day as they are much more practical than the uniforms supplied. Why can't scrubs be the uniform with maybe just one normal one to wear for formal things. Like meetings etc. We still have issues with the scrubs, being that every year they have a new company that makes them and they are either not matching or larger sizing than the previous ones. This is VERY frustrating |

I noticed in the Lamp that the name of the firm contracted by NSW Health to supply uniforms was not mentioned once in the article, why . Everyone one know's about the useless sizing, fit and quality its about time they were named and shamed maybe then they might at the very least attempt to lift their game.As the article mentioned the current contract wont expire until 2011. Until then I guess I'll stick to my scrubs. |

I HATE the new uniforms. The trousers don't fit. The skirts are scratchy and clingy. The polo tops are unsuitable for those of us above a certain age because of the shortness of the sleeves and the fabric in the other styles is awful - cold in winter and hot in summer. It's like wearing a plastic bag.
It's not difficult to tell that this uniform style/fabric was chosen by anyone EXCEPT nurses. I didn't get a survey in my copy of the Lamp. I wish I had; I'd love to have been able to have my say. I doubt the DoH would take much notice, though. |

Our company has recently changed out uniforms to polo shirts and navy pants. We have different coloured shirts for each department that you work in. Blue for nursing and the shade of blue is varied across the tiers of nursing ( AIN, EEN, and RN), white for cleaning, green for catering, pink for recreation and lifestyle and management wears a white shirt or blouse which is taylored and wuite nice and admin wears red or white blouses which are also taylored. The uniforms are really nice and comfortable and very wash and wear. The company execs consulted the staff from various facilities and came up with our new uniform. It looks quite smart and the staff feel much more comfortable and cooler than those old style polyester blouses. So far everyone is really happy with them and proud to wear them |

Our uniforms should have been made from a different material. We wear dark navy scrubs. They are comfy and practical but every piece of fluff within a one kilometre radius seems to stick to out uniforms .I feel like a lamington. I think nurse should wear uniforms to help identify our role. However, it would be better if we came to work in civvies and then donned scrubs. It would help with infection control I believe. Perhaps having RN,AIN,Team leader embroidered on our uniforms would help the elderly identify who is who. I've heard so many people over 60 complain how they wish we wore caps, veils and epaulets still. I've tried to explain that this garb was unpleasant and impractical for the wearer. At my hospital our badges are not on lanyards but clipped to a loop on the chest of our scrubs in large lettering.
The problem is combining practical & comfortable with a uniform easily identifiable with our designation. |
