Same here, and after 38 years and still working (predominantly intensive care and ED) I still enjoyit. There are better things out there, and I have started a few, but always used nursing in the process, and helped other nurses survive mentally.
Attitude is a major factor, so 'morale' boosting becomes a major concern to help others survive. I have many psychology/psychiatry friends, but always tell them I thought you had to be a psych patient before you could make that step to doing a degree in either!
There are always at least 5 times more satisfied nurses who enjoy their career than the burnt out ones, but things change in isolated pockets, eg, when nurses don't get paid.... that always starts a tidal wave of problems. How are the South Australia and Queensland nurses going re wages? |

Welcome to this forum, misscherie! I'm glad you found us here. And yes, hopefully, this group of nurses online will help you to find your way around your decision making process.
Like you, I have a psychology degree and I was practising in the field. Due to some circumstances, I did not complete my registration process and I'm now looking at a career change too. Since I'm training in the field of teaching/special education at the moment, I meet the two types as well: the really wonderful passionate teachers who love their jobs and are really making a difference and the venting ones who can easily scare a newbie like me off the profession.
I figured, though, it's best to make the final decision myself. I now have completed a year's worth of training (yay!) and have had good and bad days. But, the good has so far outweighed the bad. I'm in my second and final year... and hoping for the best. In spite the scary stories, I'm still very much looking forward to becoming part of the profession and seeing how it treats me. :-)
I wish you a wonderfully exciting journey as you test new grounds as well. I believe that if you're going in to a profession with passion and with the right expectations, then something good will come out of it no matter what. Good luck with it! And do let us know how you go. |

Hello misscherie, first of all welcome to NU! We hope you enjoy participating in the site and reading the blogs. Nursing is a fabulous career, don't let the venting stories scare you off. These are just nurses getting things off their chest as this is what this site is for, amongst other things. Like all jobs you have your good days and bad days, and the stories you see where people are dissing the profession is just them having a bad day or in a bad situation and they are looking amoungst their peers for some understanding and support. That is the beauty about this site and this industry we all can support each other and we all care. Nursing is a forfilling, exciting, loving career ( but don't expect to get rich lol) It can take you all over the world and you will meet many wonderful people who all are caring nurturing people like yourself. |

Hi all,
I am a 25 year old kiwi girl that is thinking seriously about going back to study a Bachelor of Nursing. After I finished school, I completed a Psychology bachelor degree. I am wondering if any of these psychology papers could be cross credited over to nursing school?
Basically, I am trying to figure out right now if this is the route I want to go down. I absolutely love people and get so much satisfaction from helping people. After working in 6 different offices (temping) as a PA or receptionist, I truly KNOW that I don't want to spend the rest of my life behind a desk.
So Im trying to convince myself that ANOTHER 3 years of study will be good debt (not bad debt) and I am really hoping that all of these stories of overworked burnt out nurses that hate their jobs are more situational and due to their personal experiences rather than an overall universal thinking of all nurses. I have spoken to a few nurses who love their jobs here in New Zealand and said not to be put off by negativity.
I hope that by joining this forum, I can learn from others and speak to you lovely people about the world of nursing! And that it will help me to come to a decision :-)
Thanks all xx |
