that's silly - you're supposed to meet all three learning styles when you give a presentation. Is not giving handouts a money saving measure?

Thank you for your feed back. I like hand outs but lately I have been told not to give them when I have presented a lecture.

I agree about having something to make notes on and read afterward. I also agree with Josie's comments about having a handout with relevant information on it. Slides that are illegible when reproduced at a small size or are not necessary for memory recall (the fun slides?) are not needed. Handouts are most useful when they are created with some thought about the information that will be needed afterward. Presentations are also more interesting when they are not simply a reading of the slides.
There has to be a solution that meets both needs. Powerpoint makes it so easy to create a handout and doing anything else does take more time - something we all have a limited supply of!Smile

I like handouts - my learning style is remembering by writing notes. An education session is meaningless to me without a notes page, so I always take a notebook to any education session I go to in case I'm not given a handout

The only problem with handing out the powerpoint presentation is that people read the paper rather than pay attention to what you are saying and contributing to the discussion. I am an educator, and will only sometimes give handouts if I think people need to take notes. I usually use a lot of pictures too, so there aren't many "words" on my slides. It makes things easier to recall as nurses tend to be quite visual and remember pictures and what verbally accompanied them, rather than slides and slides full of words (also known as death by powerpoint!). It might be better to give handouts of pertinent articles or a page of dot points related to the topic instead of a copy of the powerpoint itself.

Hi

I believe that power point handouts are important. We tend to only retain 10% of the information given to us during a presentation so to be able to refer back to handout information helps to retain the rest of the information longer. It is also assists you with educating others especially when your work place has allowed you to attend the education session and expect a report about the session you have attended.

thanks

Handouts are a great idea, you can always go back and read them at a later date

I am an educator and sometimes I will give handouts depending on the situation of the lecture. Although I do always ask if people want the handouts.Big Smile

Hand outs allow you to concentrate better on the presentation. I find that sometimes I can miss bits when I am busy jotting down points.

Having a space on the handout to write a note is also helpful.

What do you think?
Should we give note handouts when we give lectures?
