I will be starting as a new grad in February next year and I am very scared that I will not be well enough equipped to deal with the current nurse to patient ratio. We are taught at uni to provide holistic patient care, but under the present nurse to patient ratios and staff mix, it is likely that I will only be able to dole out the medications, get patients off to diagnostic tests and procedures then fill out the copious amounts of paperwork. This is not nursing! I am very scared that I will be burnt out by the end of my new grad year and then leave nursing.

Well until our yankee ,skank premier is thrown out nothing will change. She thought dumping radioactive waste on the western suburbs so the prissy harbourside property market could profit was much a do about nothing. She has rejected everything about the proposed 3.5% pay rise including set nurse patient ratios and would like to see benefits under workers compensation all but axed plus state mandatory rosterers for all nurses!! Our protests mean nothing , the public's protests mean nothing. Where she comes from the poor die from having no health care at all because they cannot afford to pay so why on earth would she ever give a rats about nurse patient ratios??? They would sack us all in a heart beat and import nurses from third world countries if need be to replace us if we followed the lead of Victorian nurses.Victoria got away with it but now that the government has seen it happen elsewhere they will pull out all the stops and loopholes to give them all the power they need to prevent us from doing the same.I don't believe I will see the day we have nurse:patient ratios madanted in NSW. It is a disgrace.

I left clinical nursing because after 20years of it worsening slowly we got to the point that providing worthy care to patients was like pushing water uphill. More also has to be done to stop people going to hospital in the first place. Telephone triage to lessen AED presentations. More supportive post op care/procedures to lessen re presentations, better disease management at home to reduce chronic presentations. This could be achieved with a combination of outreach nursing and medical services and telephone support. Picture a nurse calling a family at periodic intervals to see how they are managing and possibly seeing the changes in the mental health patient and prompting treatment and management before the psychotic episode. Or a cardiac patient that gets the increased angina or peripheral odema checked and noticed early enough that the MI or PO doesn't occur. Telephone triage could discuss with the patient the logic of presenting at hospital for a temp of 38 only or ongoing back pain or possible fractured pinky toe. These programs happen here and worldwide but need to be expanded.

NSW supposed to be in front yet we are so behind, i am so sorry but are new grads are in the dark metaphorically, no where near ready to cut it in the NSW health environment its disgusting. i have been nursing almost full time for 34 years, public and private. We are killing the hear t of nursing and sadly some of us will die on the job and no one will shed a tear. Administration is a cold hearted iceberg and can't see what it is doing to us who have been stoic in providing grass roots patient care. Many of them are now money orientated and should not be even considered as nurses. Nurses CARE and that is the B all and end all. So come back to earth and return to your profession and get it right from the start. If we are educated as a nurse and carer , then that is what we are and not some bureaucratic idiot stuck on dollars. Nurses have a heart and thats what makes us unique and original. Take away our heart and you let the devil in. " GET REAL" NURSE WITH YOUR HEART AND HANDS and NOT WITH YOUR PURSE STRINGS

It's about time that something is being done about this issue. All nurses are overworked and in my field of mental health it can be downright dangerous having too many patients to care for during a shift.

We'd love to have your attention on matter which we think is extremely important.

In Victoria, hospitals have official ratios of one nurse to every four patients.

However in NSW, hospitals have NO MANDATORY NURSE STAFFING LEVELS at all. That’s BAD for nurses, and WORSE for patients.

For safe patient care, NSW hospitals need a mandatory ratio of one nurse to every four patients.

Show your support to this very important campaign. What do you think? Do nurses and patients deserve the 1-to-4 ratio?

Our blog post on this is here: One2Four - The Way to Safe Patient Care. Nurses you can help.
