A contentious topic; maybe consider the issue from the patients point of view. All families present with cultural, spiritual, lifestyle and personal beliefs. Some fundamental beliefs have the potential to impede care and treatment of children with any illness or disorder. How do get around this? I've had experiences where I've had to make a notification to DoCS when a family has been so committed to a belief that the child is at risk of harm. These are very difficult clinical situations and ones in which you need to consider your "duty of care" very carefully, remembering a nurse is a mandated reporter. The DoCS reporting form has the questions you need to ask yourself when you are uncertain of reporting, and these are always helpful in these situations. If you have to report then there is then the consideration of informing the parent, providing support and explanations of why reporting is important. It's not a nice task, but if a child is at risk then it's a duty of care situation. BTW, is this question related to the recent case where the child received inadequate care for eczema and died?
