I think people have the right to their own belief systems and that, as a nurse, I honour their spiritual beliefs but my own thoughts I keep to myself. I have seen a christian nurse put a cross on the deathbed of a non christian without permission or family acceptance: did NOT help the family grieve at all but caused distress and anger. I think it is more about listening, listening and listening and trying to find the right person to help if necessary.

Tricky Emeline - but I think spiritual beliefs are a tightrope walk and I avoid being seen to have a particular belief. I admit that must be hard in a small town though! I agree that they are a very important part of many people and we should provide them with whatever spiritual resources they need. However, if a patient wants me to pray with them then I will be respectful, sit/stand quietly and listen to them pray, but I won't be the one to pray. Just look at the religious wars happening all over the world!!! I'll be respectful, but I won't lead it.

While not everyone agrees, many people accept a view of people as being spiritual beings. When a person asks for care for this part of their being, we may have resource people available who we can request a consultation with. Some places may not have that. What then?
In order to give care to the whole person, ought we not ask if they would like to have spiritual input and if so, from whom?
In a small town, a patient may know what their nurse's spiritual belief is and want to receive input from that nurse. What then? Does the nurse come back in their own time? Do they refuse?
I'm interested in what you think about these situations.

I agree that we should not impose our spiritual views on patients\residents.Also I have had occassions when I have been asked what I believe in by a resident .In this case I have just told them that I dont think its appropriate to discuss those things at work.Big Smile

I don't think we should impose any of our beliefs especially spiritual on our clients/patients. By our very nature we are in a more powerful position and I believe that we need to remain neutral so that we don't influence a vulnerable person at a difficult period in their life. I firmly believe that when we are with a patient/client it all about them not ourselves and that is what allows us to provide individual care.

Is it ethical for nurses to introduce their personal spiritual beliefs into their day to day nursing care of their patients? What about if they are psychic should this influence them to intervene? What do you think?
