My books could be seen in the office as could the lap top and I believe it was another staff member from another area who came up to borrow something that saw those things and complained to management. She had to walk through another area to get to my unit which also has just one staff member on shift. That staff member also had his books on the desk. Both of us weren't actually studying at the time but were attending to residents. The night shift RN's that I work with are great and supportive. They are just as frustrated with the "rules" as many of us are.

Same deal at my workplace management have stated - no study, no laptop while on shift. I work alone on nightshift in a dementia unit[12 beds] and always attend to my residents needs promptly, attend to the paperwork required, clean and tidy areas as well as restocking areas etc etc.I am constantly praised for my work ethic and reliability so it isn't like I sit and study all night and not do my work. Many nights I am busy all night with residents wandering, unsettled, needing toileting, pad changes etc plus night shift is required to shower and dress residents when they wake from 4am onwards so there is no time to even read a magazine. But I do have nights when I may get an hour or so of quiet time and would use that time to study. Nevermind I now sit and watch tv when it is quiet....that is deemed as acceptable apparently. Go figure!

'kaflaks' to you too! With my brothers, we used to climb on the roof, then drop a sledge hammer onto upturned bullets we found on the grounds. Once the hammer came hurtling back past us - don't know where it landed!

Nurses studying at work, often contribute as they question others there, which may actually wake up the occasional stagnating brain cell, and create a discussion. I came to Australia as a migrant, in the days of 'White Australia' and so have observed a lot of change. My mother was 11 and her sister was 1 yr old when Hitler 'annexed' Austria. Both became Nurses. My mother was 33 when we came to ASustralia, and her 'language' had her working in a factory at Villawood as a 'seamstress' for years, where she studied English. We lived in the beloved 'Nissan Huts' there ( I called them 'garbage cans')for 6.5 years. She became a nurse after about 8 years, but after a few years ended up in CSSD departments (with many other 'heavily accented' people). Don't remember if it was her choice or the hospital's. Today I watch men & women from India, Arabia, Eastern Europe etc working as cleaners, domestics, and wonder about the qualifications, hardships, losses they had before they even made it to the land of cockroaches and kangaroos, and at how many were once doctors and nurses, but gave up with the increasing difficulty for a transition. Must be frustrating.

I know nurses at my work like I am who do nightshift and university at the the same time. I am currently on a year off tho.I work with RNs who like the fact AINs or EENs are looking to become RNs and have not prevent anyone of us from studying as we still do our tasks at work and when it quite we can study or do assignments. I work with a RN who is doing honours and he brings his uni work with him like marking nursing students assignments. We can use the computers to type up assignments. I actually work with a med student who works as an AIN who to wants a better understanding of the nursing field. sorry if it doesn't make sense!

If they banned nurses from doing crosswords, Sudoko and crossword book sales decreases would put companies out of business.

This is utter rubbish, it is work related !!Tell them it is your own private study to gain points towards your national registration requirements. My guess is they don't supply inservices on your shift that could be used for that purpose.

Hi Jessjack, I am not sure what type of facility you work in however I work in a public hospital and it has never been a problem for nursing staff to do study, read or do puzzles. As you said, you are still doing your required work and the study you are doing is even related. I think you would find that in most facilities people do whatever is required in order to stay awake in those sometimes quiet periods during the night. Did you ask them why they deemed it inappropriate? Were there tasks that they expected you to complete such as restocking, cleaning that they expected you to do in quiet times? sounds to me to be a little unreasonable

I am currently an EEN and working full time as well as studying the Bachelor of Nursing full time. When I am on night shifts I tend to take my study or assignments to work just in case on the odd occasion that the night is quiet and i might be able to get some readings in and maybe a bit of an essay done. Whilst doing this I still continue my hourly rounds and answer bells and complete checks that must be completed. I was recently spoken to informally about this by management and told that I can't do it.

What is your opinion? And why can other staff members do cross words and I can't do an assignment or get some study done in this time???
