Nurses fyi – an international digital magazine

Australian nurse Rich Williams wants to make history by publishing the first nursing magazine on Apple’s Newsstand. Rich believes he has the necessary know-how to publish monthly editions of a new magazine called Nurses fyi that will be available for download to iPads and iPad minis. He’s launched a crowd funding campaign to raise the $2500 needed to produce and publish the first four editions. He believes an international digital nurses magazine will appeal to nurses everywhere, as nurses the world over  have many common interests, issues and challenges. There is currently no  nursing publication like this anywhere in the world.

Rich will be drawing on skills he’s developed in his spare time when not working fulltime as an RN. He was one of the first guest bloggers for Nurse Uncut and has been an app developer, website builder, short film-maker, conducted webinars and published on Amazon for Kindle. He hopes to build up his nursing readership so that Nurses fyi covers it own costs and then get to the point where he can go fulltime as editor and so fulfill his longterm goal of working from home with his wife and two sons.

Rich will be drawing on his 25 years of fulltime experience as a registered nurse, as well as inviting nurses to contribute articles or drop him an email outlining what subjects they’d like to see inside the magazine or suggesting nurses for interview. Hehas been working for the past 13 years in patient transport, which has him working in a variety of locations, from large metropolitan and regional hospitals to smaller rural hospitals, nursing homes and diagnostic centres. “I would have worked alongside many hundreds of nurses in virtually all areas of nursing during my 13 years transporting patients”.

He has also worked in Cardiology, Accident and Emergency, Midwifery, Operating Theatres, Intensive Care, Acute Pain Management and Patient Education. “As a nurse myself, I have developed a feel for what nurses are into and topics they might like to read and then talk about both nationally and internationally”.

Rich is excited about the potential for the magazine to combine some of the latest technology to communicate directly with the international nursing population. The magazine will contain a variety of formats, including written text with pictures (articles for nurses, by nurses), audio files of interviews, video files from Youtube and invitations to join upcoming webinars that Rich plans to host with international nursing guests.

Each edition of Nurses fyi will be an app (application software) available in Apple’s Newsstand for download onto either iPad or iPad Mini.

As Apple’s Newsstand is available worldwide, the magazine will be available in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Chinese, Russian and Japanese and other languages upon request.

The first edition, due out in the early months of 2013 (once the funding target has been reached), will be free and subsequent issues will be $3.99 each – roughly the cost of a cup of coffee.

Crowd funding is a relatively new system of raising funds for projects from donations from supporters in return for perks. Rich is using Indiegogo as his crowd funding platform to help get Nurses fyi off the ground. You can become part of nursing history by having your name published in the magazine as a contributor to the crowd funding campaign by making a contribution. You can also help Rich out by simply spreading the word to other nurses via social media.

What a wonderful idea. I would buy it but I have Android so I would be unable to access it. If it ever became available to those who don’t use Apple products, I would be one of the first in line. Good luck, Rich!

  2. Hi Sarah, Thanks for your positive feedback. Yes in time I hope to be able to extend my reach beyond iPad & iPad mini. I hope this is just the start of my plans for the nurses magazine.
