Nurses slam O’Farrell’s attack on their rights at work

The New South Wales Nurses Association’s (NSWNA) 66th annual conference has unanimously passed a resolutions on the NSW Government’s controversial new workplace rules for public sector workers.

Resolution: “This Annual Conference of the NSWNA condemns the State Government for its draconian anti-worker laws that remove all genuine collective bargaining rights for public sector workers and seize unprecedented powers for which the Government has no mandate.”

Need we say more?

For over 100 years NSW workers have had an independent umpire to provide fairness in industrial relations. No longer: the laws give the Government a blank cheque to change the wages and conditions of public sector workers with the stroke of a pen.

These laws will:

  • cut services to the community,
  • cut the pay and conditions of public sector workers,
  • shift power massively towards management during negotiations for public sector wages and conditions,
  • remove the right to have disputes resolved by the independent umpire, and
  • reduce the Industrial Relations Commission to a rubber stamp for the Government’s wages policy.

The NSWNA and its Branches will campaign to fight these laws until they are overturned!

Mr Holmes said the NSWNA has already starting campaigning on this issue, but the conference resolution now commits the NSWNA to a long term campaign until the O’Farrell Government’s attack on nurses’ and midwives’ rights at work and the independence of the NSW Industrial Relations Commission is overturned.

“This campaign will be as big as the Your Rights at Work campaign against WorkChoices. With the authority of conference we will now devote considerable resources to the campaign. The O’Farrell Government and its Upper House supporters can be assured they will be hearing a lot more about this issue,” Mr Holmes said.

How do you feel about this resolution?  Are you prepared to fight these laws?
