The six-part BBC series Call the Midwife finished on the ABC last Sunday night, but while you’re waiting for the second series (currently in production and due to screen in later-2013), you could watch the first again with our giveaway of three DVDs.
All you have to do is email us the nickname for Nurse Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne (along with your name and NSWNMA membership number.) Closing date is October 24.
The popular television series is based on a best-selling series of memoirs by nurse midwife Jennifer Worth – who was initially-naive young Jenny Lee in the East End of the 1950s, with a retrospective voiceover by Vanessa Redgrave (as Jennifer) framing each episode.
The series strikes a gentle balance between drama, humour and sometimes tragedy. It’s fascinating to look back to a time not that long ago when most babies were delivered at home, often in difficult circumstances, by these young but very competent midwives.
The series stars Jessica Raine (Robin Hood), Jenny Agutter (The Railway Children, Spooks), Pam Ferris (Little Dorrit, Darling Buds of May), Miranda Hart (Miranda) and Judy Parfitt (Little Dorrit, Girl with a Pearl Earring) and features the voice of Vanessa Redgrave.
Contest: Email the nickname of Nurse Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne, along with your name and NSWNMA membership number, to firstname.lastname@example.org by October 24. All entries will go into a draw and three members will win a two-disc set of series one of Call the Midwife (duration 355 minutes).
