Why Afternoon Delight is so important
The mental health of Australian LGBTI people is worse than the national average, with higher rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide. These mental health disparities are linked by many to experiences of homophobic and transphobic abuse and discourses.
Depression and social isolation are mutually enforcing, and social isolation emerged as a significant issue for LOVE Project participants. In general, LGBTI seniors experience higher rates of loneliness and social isolation than their non-LGBTI counterparts.
Afternoon Delight encourages people to engage with their local LGBTI community and support interactions with each other by providing a fun social outing for LGBTI seniors and their friends. This enables people who may feel socially isolated to create community connections and get to meet other LGBTI people in their local area.
ACON is NSW’s leading health promotion organisation specialising in HIV prevention, HIV support and LGBTI health. Established in 1985, its mission is to enhance the health and wellbeing of people in LGBTI communities.
Afternoon Delight is presented by ACON’s Living Older Visibly and Engaged
(LOVE) Project. The LOVE Project aims to empower LGBTI seniors to lead healthy, active and more social lives.
