It’s almost Easter (and Passover), so let’s have a quick Nurse Uncut contest!

We have five box-sets of the first four series of the wonderful Call the Midwife to give away – all the Christmas specials are included too.

Just to make it difficult (not), all you have to do to enter is tell us the name of the famous actor who does the voiceover*. Closing date is April 12.

The popular television series is based on a best-selling series of memoirs by nurse midwife Jennifer Worth – who was initially-naive young Jenny Lee in the East End of the 1950s.

Call the Midwife follows Jenny and the midwives from Nonnatus House convent, who visit the expectant mothers of London’s East End, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. The series strikes a gentle balance between drama, humour and sometimes tragedy. It’s fascinating to look back to a time not that long ago when most babies were delivered at home, often in difficult circumstances, by these young but very competent midwives.

In Series 1, Jenny gets her first job at Nonnatus House and gradually becomes accustomed to her new environment, making friends with fellow midwives Cynthia, Trixie and Chummy.

In Series 2, Jenny still finds herself shocked by the harsh conditions faced by many patients. Trixie and Sister Evangelina board a Swedish cargo ship to treat the Captain’s daughter and Dr Turner introduces the latest pain relief – gas and air.

In Series 3, Jenny faces some tough personal and professional challenges, there are changes for Chummy, as she settles into motherhood, and for Sister Bernadette, now known as Shelagh, as she prepares to marry Dr Turner.

In Series 4, the community prepares to enter a new decade, the 1960s, and welcomes new nurses Barbara Gilbert and Phyllis Crane. Nurse Cynthia embarks on a life-changing spiritual journey, Trixie receives a proposal and Chummy takes on a new challenge.

To be in with a chance to win these lovely box sets, simply email us the name of the actor who does the voiceover, along with your name and address: nurseuncut@nswnma.asn.au

*In order to enter, you must be a member of the NSWNMA, publisher of Nurse Uncut. If you haven’t yet joined the NSWNMA – remember, students and retired nurses get free membership – you can join online and then enter the contest.

The contest closes at midnight EST on Sunday April 12 and we will draw the winners the next day.

  1. Vanessa Redgrave narrates in the wonderful “Call the Midwife” series. I am a nurse, born in 1950’s … Nursing since 1970 and so many changes; even since that time. Love the show.

  2. The answer is Vanessa Redgrave and she does an amazing job. I love this series so much but dont have acess to Foxtel so am so sad to be missing this current series. I would love so much to win this prize 🙂

  3. Vanessa Redgrave is the narrator. I did a stint as a community student midwife in London during the 70s so can relate to some of the experiences encountered in the home situation. I love every episode of the series and make sure I never miss one by recording it.
